Automatic opening

Is there a particular reason for not allowing automatic opening? Or has just not been done yet?

No other reason than I never implemented it.

Ok, great, I might get back with a pull request on that then! (I wanted to use that for a small Selenium hack)

Cool! Have you already thought about the UI? I guess the best user experience would be to save the "content type" -> "open as" mapping in the Firefox Preferences > Applications table, so that it's consistent with how it's already handled. I haven't looked at the code and how feasible it is to plug into that.
