Submission name: How might we create a network of volunteers who would be willing to translate academic documents from English into Arabic?

Contact lead: [email protected]

Issue area: #OpenAccess, #OpenEducation

Region: #Africa

Issue Type: #Challenge

Description

Want to create a network to help the students and researcher to understand the academic documents which is written in English because it is a foreign language and sometimes becomes a barrier for knowledge or research.

Great project @NouranRezk, glad you decided to submit this challenge to start framing this. So, are you thinking of any particular subject area or discipline in which researchers are having troubles to access knowledge because of this language barrier?

guichactis avatar Nov 13 '17 11:11 guichactis

@guichactis I would like to be in all the Science areas.

waiting for you all guys in the main hall, the second table on the right side! ^_^

I think it's worth considering whether the translation of documents from one natural language into another is scalable for your purposes.

As an alternative, consider annotating a paper (in whatever language it is) and then adding the extracted facts to a database that is machine-readable and aware of multiple natural languages.

As an example, check out the Wikidata statement

Q13561329 P1910 Q41112

whose English equivalent would be "Reelin expression is decreased in schizophrenia", which is basically what was annotated on the source. If you then switch the language to, say, Arabic, you'll see that ريلين (Reelin) and فصام (schizophrenia) have already been translated, while the property "decreased expression in" has not. Once you do that, all further instances of "decreased expression in" will also be available in Arabic, so no need to re-translate them, as would be the case in classical document-based translations.

An update from our meeting just now, on concrete next steps:

List of folks present at the meeting who want to contribute: Eunice, Osman, Lena, Felix, Collins, Vinodh, Nouran, Lorraine

Next steps:

  • First materials to translate: OpenCon 2017 video transcripts & subtitles
  • Will use Wiki translate as a tool
  • See if @JosephMcArthur can host the Wiki
  • Also consider translating Open glossary
  • Consider translating the text on the OpenCon website!

I love this idea and that you submitted it as a project here @NouranRezk - thank you!

Sorry I didn't get a chance to contribute earlier. I think this could be really powerful not only for translating content for others to benefit, but also for congregating a diverse and supportive community of translators (I wonder if some already exist and could be learnt from? e.g. of wikipedia?).

One thing that's been in the back of my mind: eLife write plain language summaries of the research articles, to make them accessible to the non-expert (as the article itself is often written with way too much technical jargon, is too hard to understand unless you are deep into the subject, and is too long to digest quickly).

I want to help my mum (who is a french and german teacher, retired but wanting to keep her skills) to translate these summaries. Can she be a part of this community (if she is comfortable)?

Do you think it is achievable for these science summaries to be content that is translated as part of this project/by this community? Examples at: https://medium.com/@elife

npscience avatar Nov 13 '17 16:11 npscience

I'm just seeing this now. @npscience - it would be awesome if your mum could help out (I think at least!)

I'm still waiting for the OpenCon livestream materials to be organized and released, but when those are out I'll share the transcripts and subtitles so we can start translating. Thanks all for your patience!

I'm also in! I was in the group discussion. :)

Btw... has anyone proposed already a translation of the Do-a-thons guidelines into Spanish?

silviaegt avatar Sep 09 '19 23:09 silviaegt

Not to my knowledge, sadly!

JosephMcArthur avatar Sep 10 '19 10:09 JosephMcArthur

I'd love to collaborate with this! Do-a-thons are always great and the tutorial can be re-used in other many contexts!

That's awesome, we'd be happy to as well! Are you a part of the LATAM re-organizing team?

JosephMcArthur avatar Sep 10 '19 14:09 JosephMcArthur

Sadly, not. Missed the call for grants and I'm also very busy this year. But can help online or as a future project.
