Description
This do-a-thon session will be co-facilitated by Jessica Polka (Director of ASAPbio) and Samantha Hindle (ASAPbio Ambasador). To facilitate the progression of science and open access to research outputs, ASAPbio strives to engage the biology community in discussion about preprints: scholarly manuscripts that have not yet gone through editorial peer review.
To promote education about preprints worldwide, we will use design thinking to develop resources to support ASAPbio Ambassadors with preprint advocacy activities. We will start the session with a brainstorming exercise, and use design thinking to decide how we can best support preprint advocates in promoting the use of preprints in biology. All are welcome.
What are we working on during the do-a-thon? What kinds of support do we need?
We have a few ideas of ways we can support ASAPbio Ambassadors (and preprint advocates) in educating scientists about preprints, but we would love to hear your thoughts. We would welcome your help with generating a database of preprint stakeholders who are willing to support ASAPbio Ambassadors in preprint advocacy events worldwide, and to develop accompanying educational materials (e.g. detailed answers to preprint FAQs, transcripts for preprint slide decks, example workshop activities, and follow-up materials).
How can others contribute?
Have you submitted a #preprint? @HindleSamantha & I want to help you tell your story. Meet us at 4:30pm in the lobby and get ready for your closeup :) See this tweet if you're interested or want to seen an example of what we'd like to do.
Update: these are now here!
Let's get together or start a conversation here to brainstorm ideas for how to support ASAPbio Ambassadors (and preprint advocates in general) to run their own preprint information sessions and workshops. Ideas we have thought of include:
- Building a database of preprint stakeholders willing to help Ambassadors to co-facilitate preprint advocacy events
- Producing preprint educational resources (e.g. detailed/up-to-date answers to preprint FAQs)
- Generating preprint workshop ideas with a supporting "How to" guide for event facilitators
Here's our working document for notes and ideas!
Do you have questions about preprints or how you can be supported with advocacy activities? Comment here and/or come along to our session to get involved.
This post is part of the OpenCon 2017 Do-A-Thon. Not sure what's going on? Head here.
So great! Excited to work on this important project. Lack of awareness might be the biggest barrier to preprint adoption.
Should we create empathy map and user maps to brainstorm advocacy points for preprint enthusiasts ?
Love that idea @inquisitivevi!
@SamanthaHindle and I are planning to meet up in the main hall (Goethe) and go on from there!
@npscience adding myself in to follow
We are creating a collaborative doc here if you would like to get involved.
We will be in the lobby at 4:30pm to collect your stories about how preprints have impacted you. Help us get your voices out there! :)
Thanks Ashley Farley, Micah Vandegrift, Peder Isager, Lena Lampe, Robin Champieux, and James Fraser for your preprint stories! They're fantastic! We will start tweeting them out in the upcoming weeks.
If anyone would like to contribute your preprint story, please fill out our quick Google Form here...it's not too late!
Thanks everyone!
Some of the preprint stories we collected are now posted on the ASAPbio website, and more will be trickling in! You're still more than welcome to contribute (see link above)
NOTE TO SELF: Build on this for 2018 OpenCon doathon && ambassadors toolkit moving forward.
Previous, current and new contributors always welcome! Please email me at naomi dot penfold at asapbio dot org or @ me in here to notify me :)
