performance benchmarking of WFI vs JWST imaging PSF calcs - is WFIRST slow?

Open mperrin opened this issue 5 years ago • 2 comments

In testing we (me, @robelgeda) noticed some WFIRST tests were taking longer to run than we expected. Simple benchmarking on my laptop shows WFI takes ~5-10x longer per wavelength than for NIRCam, for comparable sampling settings. We should identify why this is.

Most simply this may just be due to WFI defaulting to 20482 pupil arrays while JWST is 10242. But we should verify if that is indeed the case or if there is something that could be more performant in the interpolations or other optics model setup.

This is an old stale issue. I think we should perhaps just close it, as no one has complained on this lately. But maybe its worth a quick benchmark test. What do you think @ojustino?

I think it's worth a test, but I don't think it should hold up a 1.0.0 release. I can add it to my to-do list for the future.
