DOI for each notebook (or notebook output)
It would be very useful if we had a way to assign a DOI (e.g., using Zenodo) to, let's say, the processed HTML output of a notebook. This way the notebooks can be easily referenced in journal articles and the authors could get the appropriate attribution.
There are some questions that come up out of this:
- What should the DOI reference? I sort of am thinking the HTML output of the workbook, but maybe the actual notebook would make more sense (?)
- How could we reference "versions" of each notebook, can we make it so the DOI points to just "the current version" of a URL or github notebook?
- How could we advertise these DOI (in the notebook? in the README of the repo?)
Anyway, it might be a good way to give more legitimacy to the notebooks and enable easy referencing in papers.

I asked on SWC mailing list. So far, there is one external response -- https://carpentries.topicbox.com/groups/discuss/T30e063a442670936
But that answer seems to be discussing a DOI for the repo (and versions of the repo) and not for each entry. Maybe I am mis-understanding the discussion in that link. A DOI for each entry was my original thought, but maybe that really is just too difficult.
You can ask for clarification in that thread. Please feel free to do so! In my limited understanding, I get the impression that making releases is the way to go.
