Honestly, I wish it existed a few years back, when I was first starting out on my PhD research; it would have made my life significantly easier...

I would like to incur with previous statements. At the moment sled is my go to database. It is extremely convenient to not have to set up a database the way you would with postgresql or mariadb and knowing anyone who builds or uses my program doesn't either. The performance and API is great too!

I know I'm repeating myself here, but sled is AWESOME! I've been spending some time writing code that is intended to break sled, just to see how well it works, and to see how well it defends itself from horrible programming. And I've been very pleased with how well it handles the abuse! No corruptions, and it's still fast. That's impressive!
