Different custom command behavior with ONLY_CUSTOMCMD

Issue Description
I am trying to bypass the Id Tech Launcher for Doom Eternal by having SteamTinkerLaunch run the game directly for me. I've set CUSTOMCMD to point to the game's executable, and added CUSTOMCMD_ARGS that I want to pass through.
Unfortunately, if I enable ONLY_CUSTOMCMD to not launch the game the second time via the launcher, the game doesn't run at all. I have consistently reproduced this several times. Just turning ONLY_CUSTOMCMD back off is enough to fix the game launch and directly run the executable.

I must admit I'm not an expert so take my words with a grain of salt.
My second guess is DRM? Though I would expect some error message in that case.
Have you tried running it without any external programs (Gamescope, mangohud, etc.), launch options, etc.?
Have you tried running the executable directly through steam as a non-steam game?
