Init error, possibly related to encoding?

I'm seeing this message starting gdb after installation by running the install script:

---Type <return> to continue, or q <return> to quit--- 
^[[1m^[[31mVoltron loaded.^[(B^[[m
Reading symbols from ./hello...done.

The expected UI didn't show up. And if I quit gdb, the terminal would become irresponsive.

My system is Ubuntu 18.04 and gdb is 8.1 Any help will be appreciated

Did you open some views in other terminals (as described in step 3 of the quick start) or are you expecting something to happen just by running gdb?
