Note that the version installed via apt, from http://ppa.launchpad.net/otto-kesselgulasch/gimp/ubuntu/ does not have this issue. Only the snap package.

the unity global menu requires custom gtk modules to be compiled. I haven't done that because I'm still struggling to get basic things working like icons.

It appears that the global menu on KDE is also not working with this snap. Presumably, this means that the MATE and Budgie ones don't work either although I haven't tested that hypothesis.
