atom fails to run on Debian; issue resolved with '--no-sandbox' option
When I try to run atom from the menu or the command line it simply fails to run. From the command line nothing happens at all, no output. This happens with Debian/Buster (10) and Debian/Sid (unstable).

Looking at the syslog there are messages like this when trying to launch atom:
Aug 12 16:51:34 host kernel: [19742.969706] traps: atom[1489839] trap int3 ip:55c856dc7627 sp:7ffef6244a60 error:0 in atom[55c854ea3000+5024000]
It is possible to launch atom using the '--no-sandbox' option:
$ /snap/bin/atom --no-sandbox
As a workaround I created a Bash alias:
alias atom="/snap/bin/atom --no-sandbox"
which requires that atom be launched via the command-line.
Other people have suggested editing the atom .desktop file, however since that file is dependent upon the specific version of atom that is installed and will be updated frequently it is not a good idea to edit it.
