You are right. Actually, I implemented the RPC and command line APIs with an ability to disable tray icon to support this in future.
I welcome anyone contributing to this. Currently, I am running out of time because of my studies and 3 other FOSS projects so I will consider this only after I get enough time.
I am postponing a lot more implementations due to this reason sorry for being inactive for a long time :-(

@orschiro , May I ask what plugin are you using to show an active timer right in the gnome panel. For me the timer shows in the dropdown menu (see attached). This is the only feature in workrave that is keeping me from switching to safe eyes. I looked at plugin creation in safe eyes but could not figure out how to generate an active timer alongside the safe eyes icon in gnome panel. Thank you @slgobinath for such an awesome software.

Thank you. There is some issue with my Ubuntu 16.04 installation and I couldn't get the Kstatus extension to work properly. So for the time being, I will continue to use safe eyes without the timer display.
