Talk to astropy about becoming an affiliated package

For reference: https://www.astropy.org/affiliated/#becoming-an-affiliated-package I feel we fall short on a couple of the criteria at the moment, specifically using astropy functions and adequate documentation. It's not clear what the timeline for becoming affiliated is but does it make sense to aim to coincide with our v1.0 release?

Reviewed on 22/11/22 and kept as an intention for future development. @aamara is this still a worthwhile intention?
