Although the image creation is quite fast (a second or two even if 6000 flights are added) it should be cached. Maybe using nginx proxy_cache as suggested in #304 would be a good solution.

Looks like we have to run the mapproxy as a separate process to safely avoid the deadlock described in c6ccdad8f837a12fe30b4904b5b5c94339cfd980. Will open another PR for that...

@TobiasLohner this PR has been open for more than 6 years already. Could you double check and either rescue it or close it?

for future direction, I'd prefer for our server to return this kind of data as vector tiles and display it on dynamic map instead. using the mapserver for this makes it quite hard to maintain and test properly.
