Best Way to Debug?

I have been tinkering with my nano 9k for a while now. I was wondering about how you debugged and coded picotiny. I was trying to use GAO but is that the best way?

Imagine one wants to write a new riscv for nano 9k. What' the best approach and what are available debug tools?
