virustotal has a cost if using it above a certain hit rate. But totally agree that in these times of badware / phishing, a check as good as possible should be good. Maybe using some RBLs (as spam/virus filtering software does) is usefull (but they are not always free above a hit rate limit). Blocking complete domains or only looking at domain name is not always a good solution, as phishing sitse can very good hide themself inside a directory of an innocent site whose owner does not know it is present
