Sites by other users on Tiddlyhost cannot be easily downloaded (and related UX considerations)

Open kookma opened this issue 3 years ago • 10 comments

I have logged in to tiddlyhost.com and have some sites!

Then I open another site (not belong to me) e.g https://simon.tiddlyhost.com/ and click on the save button the wiki shows the notification top right Starting to save wiki and nothing happens then!

Expected behavior: Clicking on the save button on the wikis by other users shall start saving wiki locally.

Ah, that's interesting. I will investigate.

Update: Wait, I misunderstood. This is probably expected behavior currently, but the idea of falling back to a download is interesting, though I'm trying to avoid any work that requires modifying TiddlyWiki.

I assume the current configuration of TW saver is to save on the server if the user/pass is entered correctly on $:/ControlPanel / Saving e.g for GitHub. If the credential is entered incorrectly, TW tries to save on the server (and fails) but if one of the field user/pass is empty then, it falls back to download. I think @Jermolene can explain this!

There's some logic in TW to decide which saver can be used. But falling back to a different saving technique if the selected method fails is not part of that iiuc.

Maybe what you really need in this situation is an easily findable https://simon.tiddlyhost.com/download link.

This makes sense! and one can add the download link inside the wiki!

Just to say that TW5 really ought to offer a way to trigger a specific saver when saving. At the moment, the saver cascade is hidden in JavaScript-land, which makes things a bit inscrutable.

Another idea: There could be a dedicated "Save to Tiddlyhost" button, but it would require #20 probably.

I prefer this idea! I think the current tiddlyspot interface in TW5 could be replaced with tiddlyhost.

my 2 cents as a user.

  • I would ideally be able to change order of preference for saving and have a checkbox next to each saver to turn it off or on so that I can save backups using different savers
  • I have edited $:/snippets/download-wiki-button to make a configurable download button as a workaround which I just drop into any new wiki I make.

The discussion meandered here, but I thought I'd mention, there's now a "Download" button for all the clone-able sites, see here.

The idea of putting a download button on every site listed, (say here), could be considered, but I'm not sure it's the right thing. I see that page as being about sharing interesting content, so it's likely the average reader isn't thinking "how do I download this".
