Better handling for incorrect versifications

We've run into a number of difficult-to-debug issues that have boiled down to a project's USFM not being consistent with its versification . Is there anything we can do about this? How computationally expensive would it be to run a check over the USFM being handled to confirm that its last verses are the same as the versification's last verses? My concern is that this is happening quietly and affecting translation quality or other tooling.
