Signal Will Not Start After Update or New Download

Open sig-hackeruno opened this issue 10 months ago • 5 comments

Using a supported version?

  • [x] I have searched searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
  • [x] I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

macOS 14.7.1 (23H222) on M2 Max 16" MBP

Received the standard pop-up dialog box which said that a Signal update was available. Authenticated as an admin user. Signal showed that an update was available and clicked to update. Signal exited.

Recently, Signal has not been restarting after updates, so I have to manually restart it. Until today, that has been working.

Today, trying to restart Signal manually (Dock, or Finder-->Applications-->Signal) does nothing. Found it was hung and killed it. Tried again, and Signal again hung on startup.

Downloaded a fresh install from official Signal Desktop website. Same results.

Started Activity Monitor, which also shows the new Signal instance as not responding. Did a SpinDump (Attached). Process would not die. Had to do a force quit multiple times to get it to go away.

Help!!

Steps to reproduce

See above for full details

Expected result

Signal to not crash and burn after an update.

Actual result

Update killed Signal. Killed it real dead. Even a fresh new install will not work.

Could you get the debuglogs from the file system: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318591-Debug-Logs-and-Crash-Reports

macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Signal

Can you create a zip of the logs folder?

I have the same problems. macbook pro 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 macOS 15.3.1 (24D70)

It started with 7.42, but only sometime last night (i used it for days without problems); and I thought installing 7.43 would help, but it is still not working on desktop.

Works now

Just updated to: Signal Desktop 7.44.0 production⁩ (Apple silicon).

This is the first time Signal has successfully updated itself since the problem began.

Hopefully, the problem is now fixed.

I am facing this issue on signal 7.56.1 downloaded from signal website on macOS 15.5 (24F74)

I tried deleting and reinstalling signal and clearing application data from library folder as well. Still it will not launch and keep saying "not responding".

I am facing this issue since last 1 month, please help.
