Overall summary
Signal Desktop 7.28 on osx
Steps to reproduce
- Reopen Desktop 7.28
- See error in the top left
Expected result
I don't expect to see that error and I don't want to change my username. It might be because I had username.number and it looks like the period is no longer accepted so needs to be namenumber now?
Actual result
Error warning persists when I open Desktop

Hi there, apologies this is happening to you. Was there any recent activity on Android like device transfer, or did the error just show up on desktop?
Yes, sorry I should have mentioned this. A few weeks ago I bought a newer device (stock google) so I was going to move things over, starting with Signal (recovery from backup), but I decided yesterday to move it back (recovery from backup, overwriting the several week old instance still there) to the older non-google phone (GrapheneOS) before this error started.
I checked in with Android and learned it's related to the device transfer. We're looking into it. Sorry about that!
Hi, is there any kind of work around for this? I transferred an account to a new device as well and experiencing this. I also don't want to change my username.
I’m also seeing this error today after transferring (back) to my newer phone last Wednesday. The error occurs on 2 different computers.
I also transferred back and forth between phones (to old one, RMA’ed the newer one in repair mode, then got it back and continued using it without reinstalling anything, just transferred Signal account back on it).
Note that I also had username issues with both Signal Desktop and Android after both transfers. In both cases I recovered my username (although with the old phone I had more issues as the app was initially crashing when trying to do that).
@DidierLoiseau I'm sorry about the difficulties you've had - can you provide the specific versions of Signal Android you used to do those transfers? We do believe that the issue is fixed at this point for that transfer scenario.
Just had this issue with version 7.22.2 of the Android app, if that helps. It seems like this is the newest version on the Play Store atm.
edit: and 7.30.0 of the desktop client on Linux.
@tendstofortytwo Can we get debug logs from your Android device (Help/Debug log) and Desktop (View/Debug Log)? Also, what actions did you take - did you transfer from one Android device to another, like the others in this discussion?

I restored from a backup after a factory reset of my phone.
Transferred Signal to a new Android phone (now on 7.25.0), and Linux Desktop 7.34.0. The Desktop has the "something went wrong with your username" message. If I click "Fix now" it asks to Choose a username, when I choose my old one it pairs it with the correct number (as it is listed in the Android app: USERNAME.NUMBER). If I click Save, it says that recovering my username will reset my QR code and link. When I click Continue, it spins for a second and then is back to entering my username (already filled in). I can click Save to do this forever. If I click Cancel, I get back to what I had before...
Android Version 7.25.2
I've been having this warning each day on my phone when I open the app. I follow the change flow, then get the same issue the next day.
This started after I linked a device that I'm using with the REST API via a container.
@pepa65 @skeet70 Could you please include debuglogs for both your desktop and android devices: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318591-Debug-Logs-and-Crash-Reports
Same issue, after a device transfer (Pixel 6 to Pixel 9), I am seeing the username issue on all my linked PCs. I did see it on my phone but I used the fix option and was able to recover my same username. But the message will not go away on linked PCs.

@jamiebuilds-signal here's my Android (has the username problem) and desktop (doesn't show any username warning) logs. I have no relevant logs from the REST API client I'm running, other than a test message I just fired gave

and came through fine. That client has been running since 11/28.
Same issue here. Very confusing
I recently moved to a new phone and have this problem as well. Both my phone and linked desktop clients show the message.
I have the same issue, also moved to a new phone and get the error in the desktop client.
@thijsk thank you for the report. Could you submit debug logs from both Desktop and phone?
I have the same issue 😐 Just submitted a debug log. Edit: it just happened again out of the blue after I had already set my username the first time around.
Same here. Message appears only in the Deskop App and not on the Android App.
No the message appeared on my smartphone and there i could enter my existing username and save it successfully. The message on my 3 desktop-clients stays and saving the existing username does not work and the window stays.
Same message has appeared on my desktop client (Windows 11) after I migrated my account from my old S23 Ultra to my new S25 Ultra.
It also appeared in the Android app, but it looks like I was able to successfully recover my username there. It only appears now on my desktop app.

Having the same problem after attempting to put Signal onto my Samsung A9+ unsuccessfully. It does not show up on my Android phone, but on windows 11 and putting in the current account name does not take.
Same here, I added a username from my phone and now the desktop app shows this message.

@otonoton can you share android & desktop logs? Did this occur after a device transfer or re-registration on your phone?
Same situation, just transferred to a new android phone. I am getting the username error on my new phone. Initially I thought it was because I had not yet uninstalled Signal on the old device (hadn't gotten to that step yet). But after completing the uninstall on the old phone, still getting an error. I did not transfer the number - I have a new number on the new phone, could that be the issue? (didn't see anything about number being a condition for transfer on https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007059752-Backup-and-Restore-Messages#android_transfer). Will wait on changing it for now.
Including both debug logs, but Desktop has no error.
I'm having this issue with a pixel fold on android 15, I had a fold that I dropped so this is an insurance replacement, I did the android to android bluetooth account transfer, re-paired my desktop, and now the desktop just keeps showing an error about the username, if I do the set username it says I'm resetting my QR code and link, I click continue, then seemingly nothing happens and the error persists. I still have my old android device without the factory reset, would you like logs from me?

Answering my own question: the new number is what caused the user id problem. I put the backup on the original phone and reinstalled Signal, restored from backup. Then I used "change phone number" to change to the new phone number on the old device. Backed up again, and moved the backup to the new phone. Installed and recovered from backup, and now the user id is fine, because it is associated with the new number.
Hi! Just experienced the same. I saw that Graphene was already mentioned here. I moved my account from a stock Pixel Android to Graphene and then back (moved my account by mistake), then the message about my username appeared. My phone number stayed the same (the Graphene device didn't have a SIM, the stock android device had one physical and a eSIM).
Same problem. I use Android (7.36.2) and Windows Desktop (7.46.0). Tried logging in on a different Android phone and then this started happening when I logged back into the original phone, and on Signal Desktop. The Android app let me have the same username, as did the Windows desktop app.
FWIW - the "new" phone I logged in on doesn't have a phone number, just wifi.
