Overall summary

Ubuntu 22.04 Signal 6.46.0

I have reported many problems with the capcha system, eg: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/issues/6714

Something has just changed. I have a group for which in the past I have gotten two capchas in a row, and then am allowed to continue. Now, I received one capcha - "Verify to continue messaging," I click "Continue," solved it - and then on return to Signal saw a quick popup saying, "Verification failed." The "Verify to continue messaging" window did not disappear and then reappear, as it always has in the past. I clicked on "Continue" anyway and solved another. On return to Signal, there was no response. No popup, no sign of anything from the "Verify to continue messaging" window. So I clicked "Continue" again. I've done that and solved the capcha 5 times now, with no indication of anything from Signal.

Log

When I try to finally just cancel out, I get the "Continue without verifying" window? This is going to leave me in trouble, as I use Signal a lot and in the past this has caused me to be locked out for some time.

Edit: So after cancelling the "Continue without verifying" window, and solving another capcha, I got another popup. This said, "Verification failed, please try later." Then the "Verify to continue messaging" window went away and quickly came back. I repeated this process a second time, but this time, there was no quick popup, and the "Verify to continue messaging" window showed no sign of any response.

Note this group has 251 members. Four of them are listed as "Unknown," but there are many of these "no groups in common" as described here: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/issues/6765

It was suggested that I close and restart Signal. I did that, and was able to solve a capcha and have the "Verify to continue messaging" window go away. I sent a couple of messages, and it seems to be quiet.

I've just sent a message to an individual who I've communicated with 1-1 before, and who sent me a message last week that I'm responding to now. The spinner on the message went for quite some time before turning into a single check mark, and while it was spinning, my fans on my laptop spun up for maybe 30-60 seconds.

I started to generate this debug log while the spinner was going, by the time it was generated there was a single check-mark present. Log.

I don't know if this is connected, but while I was struggling with the series of capchas, reported in the OP, the fans were going like crazy.

I'm getting the same problem again.

For those groups that are asking for multiple capchas in a row, I have to restart repeatedly to get through them all. It's not 1-for-1, but to get through 7 capchas, I had to restart 3 times.

Sorry for these troubles, @DiagonalArg. The long time sending a message may have been from some service instability at that time.

As far as I can tell, this problem appears to be fixed. (Version 7.0.0). Not sure if I should close, so I'll leave it open.

Edit: Belay that - no, problem is still here. Log
