Contact names only partially syncing from Android to Desktop
-
[x] I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates

[x] I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.
Bug Description
Android contact name changes to First Name and Last Name are propagated to Signal Android and then to Signal Desktop. However if a Middle/Last Name on an Android contact is removed the name is not removed from Signal.
Steps to Reproduce
- Change contact name in Android contacts App. Specifically removing a Lastname or if multiple names in the First Name field removing one.
- Refresh your Android Signal contact list
- Use "Import Now" button in Signal-Desktop
Actual Result:
The Middle and/or Last Names fields are not removed from Signal. (If Changing First and Last names these changes work)
Expected Result:
Signal Desktop contact name is the same as that on Android contacts app, all contact names changes are properly synced.

Platform Info
Signal Version:
6.7.0
Operating System:
Windows
Linked Device Version:
GrapheneOS (Android 13) App is v 6.12.6 (when originally posted this bug report I was on 6.12.5 but have since updated Signal and still experiencing this)
@combat-entropy What versions of both signal desktop and signal android did you last use when syncing? Can you provide debug logs for both?
I have nearly the same issue. If I name a contact on Android as:
Fist name: Name
Middle name: Middle
Last name: LastName1 LastName2
I get a contact on desktop as Name Middle LastName2
. If instead I set:
Fist name: Name
Middle name: Middle
Last name: LastName1
I get a on desktop: Name Middle
, the LastName1 dissapears and only fisrt name and middle name are displayed.
I am on Android 13, Signal 6.13.6 and Desktop 6.8.0.
This issue is still happening with 7.5.1
Deleting the Last Name of a contact in the phone's Contacts app syncs properly with Signal-Android, but not with Signal-Desktop.
@pippi1otta sorry about this. We'd appreciate if you could help us gather a bit of information:
- Could you open Settings window in Signal Desktop, and navigate to the "Chats" tab
- Press "Import now" button next to "Import contacts", and wait for import to finish
- Open the conversation with the contact for whom you see the outdated name
- Press "View > Debug Log", and send me a debug log, please?
Thank you so much!
@indutny-signal here you are - https://debuglogs.org/desktop/7.5.1/865f43f118fca411b4c29a4f64dafbc35277e23077ad0b5b8872b208de331c78.gz
@pippi1otta thank you so much! If this is not too much to ask, could you also provide debug log from your phone?
@indutny-signal

Caveat: the above log is from right now, but the last time I played with my phonebook was a few days ago. In case you don't find anything relevant, try this one:

(I think I captured it right after encountering this issue. Not sure.)
3. Open the conversation with the contact for whom you see the outdated name ~@indutny-signal
Just to point out, I have multiple contacts with leftover last names. It's reproducible 100%.
@pippi1otta thank you so much! We are looking into it (it might get a fix on Android side)
