Bug description

Hello, I'm trying to re-register an old phone that got deregistered by another phone being registered, so that I can transfer the account to the new one.

Tapping Re-register → continue → enter pin code → popup saying "error connecting to service". Signal works fine on the same network on other devices.

Yesterday I opened Signal after a while and was surprised that it's making me re-register (I previously successfully transferred Signal to this phone and never registered any other device). But I'm getting the same issue: after entering PIN, it just says "Error connecting to service".

My situation is slightly different though: I haven't registered on another device, nor do I have any other devices (computers) linked or anything. So this issue is completely preventing Signal from being used.

I'm on Samsung Galaxy S25+ with Android 15 and Signal 7.53.4.

I'm having this issue on a Sonim XP3+ with Android 11, I wondered if the android version was the problem but apparently versions going back to 5.0 are supported? I get put in a weird captcha loop and never receive any verification texts* but if I put in a random code I get "error connecting to service" instead of something saying it's incorrect.

*((I know that my phone can receive SMS from signal as I used it to register back onto an old device while I was having the issue. It seems like the verification request isn't even being sent)

@flowerfugue could you provide a debuglog? Tap the title of any screen 8 times and it should prompt to submit one.

@cody-signal Here's the debug log! I got this one right after getting to the code verification screen.

As of 7.57.1, registering works on S7 edge

Just tested on 7.57.2, no change to the issue on mine

Re-registration worked for me today on 7.57.2, but I hadn't tried for a while, so I can't say for sure if it was related to app version or something else.

The interesting thing is that re-registering only required SMS verification. After that, I wasn't even asked for my PIN like I was before. Also before I guess SMS verification skipped entirely or I'm not sure what. Anyway, after re-registering, I had my data but had to configure my account from scratch, including setting the PIN again.

7.60.4 on Android 13 seems to be experiencing a similar issue. Trying to restore a back up while registering.

I'm trying to transfer the account from an old phone (old phone: Galaxy S7, Android 8.0; new phone: Pixel 8, CalyxOS 6.10.20; Signal v7.32.2 (150900)). Tho phones connect and show the same code but indicate that the numbers don't match. When continuing, the new phone states that the process was successful and to continue with registration, the old phone states that the transfer failed. Then, when trying to send the additional verification code on the new phone, it states that no connection to the service is possible and to check my network connection and to try again. I already successfully received verification codes today and I gave Signal every permission I could.
