Bug description

Spam verification fails despite successful captcha, signal is constantly asking for spam verification. Cannot use signal messaging on android phone at all for the last days!

Steps to reproduce

  • open signal
  • signal asks to verify in order to send messages again
  • open verification dialogue
  • solve hcaptcha
  • dialogue closed
  • try to message someone on signal
  • verification dialogue pops up again!

Device info

Device: FP3 Android version: 13 , 20-20230704-microG-FP3 Signal version: 6.34.5

Seems to be solved with 6.35.3

Problem still persists https://debuglogs.org/android/6.35.3/ab0ce08652d17ae6b251f801cfb1a4785374c4022b107431038c980bc64a3643

Hi @lilaL is this still happening on the regular for you?

cody-signal avatar Oct 19 '23 18:10 cody-signal

I have the same problem, both on the Android App (6.36.5) as well as on Signal-Desktop (6.35.0). On Signal-Desktop it occasionally even displays a gray box saying "Verification complete", while continuing to ask to "Verify to continue messaging". Previously I have never been asked by Signal to solve captchas to continue messaging, so my experience with this bug/problem is limited.

It is irritating to me, that the problem persists on my PC as well as on my Android phone - so it might primarily be a Signal problem and not related to the operating systems.

Help would be highly appreciated, as I really like using Signal as well as nudging others in this direction. In the current state Signal is almost unusable for me... There clearly is a problem of relaying the signal-hcaptcha response to Signal for correct processing.

Thank you for looking into it!

@nielek2 could you provide debuglogs from android and/or desktop? Thanks!

cody-signal avatar Oct 23 '23 14:10 cody-signal

sent the debuglog from desktop to support, asking to relay it to @cody-signal

nielek2 avatar Oct 23 '23 14:10 nielek2

...and now i did the same for the android debuglog. on android it suddenly stopped nagging, but on the desktop the problem still persists. (and i guess it will reoccur in the android app as well.)

thanks a lot for looking into it, @cody-signal!

possibly duplicate issue: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues/13192

nielek2 avatar Oct 23 '23 19:10 nielek2

@cody-signal today i managed to get signal-desktop to stop loop-asking for captchas again - but only briefly. firefox (private mode) is my standard browser. i copied the request from firefox into chromium and this time it also said "Verification complete", but this time also stopped nagging.

to verify i triggered the captcha again by writing a friend without recent chat history. now it is back to loop-asking and the request copying does not solve it anymore...

hope it helps in debugging, please let me know if i can try something, really would appreciate this getting fixed

@cody-signal somehow signal is not asking anymore.

Started happening here too in one situation where mostly group chats are being used by several people in one network. This is causing real life problems now for a bigger group, they will need to switch away from Signal.

@tjyrinki Can you please share a debuglog? Settings > Help > Debug log

I will eventually if I get access, this was unfortunately second-hand information I shared. The dialog had arrived 8 times by that time, with always there remaining undelivered messages.

It sounds like a workaround was to disable the wifi where the device(s) were being used, using mobile network instead.

This happens for me as well:

  • verification required for spam prevention
  • solving hCaptcha (images or text challenge) seems to work fine, it shows green checkmark
  • continues to require verification again, endless loop

Ok, not sure if Signal team changed something or if it healed by its own: it works again after I had created this comment. Just waited if it is stable which seems to be the case.

i am having this same problem after leaving a large group.

update:

i started getting these messages immediately after i left one large group (hundreds of members with dozens of outstanding invites). i see a number of 'safety number changed' messages, no phone numbers or unknown. this hcaptcha loop happened when i did nothing. i complete a captcha then several seconds later (maybe around 10s) it pops up another notification for me do another even without me doing a single thing.

fortunately, the issue for me currently seems to have resolved after about half a day--here is some more information that may be helpful in figuring out what was going on:

  • throughout the duration of this problem happening, my phone would eventually completely lose mobile connection (currently I am roaming internationally). toggling airplane mode had no effect. when i restarted i would regain connection, then the problem would quickly pop up again and after some time the phone would lose connection again etc.
  • after numerous hours i randomly saw a notification from the group i left, which said something along the lines of "failed to send message to 2 contacts in this group" (it was a temporary message that disappeared quickly--not sure about the exact verbiage or the number of contacts), after which the problem went away.

for the majority of the issue happening i was on data roaming...regrettably i'm not entirely sure if i was on wifi or data roaming when the issue started and when it stopped.

did signal keep trying and failing to send a bunch of "this person left the group" messages to some people in this large group, up to the point that it somehow repeatedly crashed my mobile service? then eventually it was finally able to reach the timeout/retry limit, gave up and everything worked again? maybe poor speculation on my part, since i also thought most signal data gets sent encrypted to signal servers and waits to get sent to the recipient on the server 🤷‍♀️

I have the exact same issue with Signal on Android 11 (security updates Nov.2023), Samsung Galaxy S9. I cannot send any messages anymore... Before the issue started I did not do any update, and have been using Signal on the device and OS for more than 1 year without any captcha issue.

Signal Version: 6.40.4 Android 11 with security update Nov'23 Device: Samsung Galaxy S9

I am having the same issue when trying to create an account, during phone verification. Tried on different phones: Signal version: 6.45.2 Android 11 with security update Sep'22 Device: Redmi Note 11

Signal version: 6.44.3 Android 12 with security update Apr'23 Device: Poco M5s

Also tried different internet providers (assuming that one of IPs may lead to the issue), still no luck.

@OlgaGnatenko do you happen to have a log from either device?

clark-signal avatar Feb 06 '24 16:02 clark-signal

I have the same issue on Signal desktop on a Mac. I get prompted for the captcha, solve 2 captchas and then get an error message in the signal desktop client and get prompted again. This repeats on a loop. The debug log from the desktop client is here
