Adds the Rhode-class cargo frieghter. (Scav Two)

Open thearbiber opened this issue 8 months ago • 17 comments

About The Pull Request

Adds in a spiritual successor (?) to the scav class, the rhode class. A small cargo/generalist ship with relatively meh supplies, a very open bay, and a crew of 4. Crew being: Foreman Miner Scrapper x2

Why It's Good For The Game

Suprisingly, Miski had a lack of small generalist. Also more ship's doesn't hurt I suppose.

peak takes time welcome back scav

generalthrax avatar May 04 '25 08:05 generalthrax

This is how I remembered scav when I was young 18 years ago

thgvr avatar May 04 '25 09:05 thgvr

i always thought the mudskipper was the successor to the scav

all told i’m as much a hater of the layout as i was for the scav’s. crew lounge+mess and cargo being in the same enormous and deliciously breachable room feels a little too out there even for miski (that, and miski ships have a tendency towards smaller, occasionally cramped rooms in general, so this one sticks out like a sore thumb)

bathroom’s too big for the ship size too, i can’t believe you passed up the opportunity for a classic miski shoilet

Apogee-dev avatar May 05 '25 19:05 Apogee-dev

IDK i like it and there isnt really another ship that feels like it

also are you really complaining that there ISNT a shoilet. come on

thgvr avatar May 05 '25 20:05 thgvr

i will absolutely complain about there not being a shoilet on a miskilamo ship because it’s part of my whole issue with this ship right now: it doesn’t really feel like the other miskilamo ships yet.

in terms of specifically actionable feedback:

  • separate the canteen and cargo with a bulkhead (you can shrink the bathroom and hallway by a tile if you need extra room for the kitchen, and i think you probably should because both rooms are a little too large for this ship’s size)
  • greeble the exterior a bit. all of the other miskilamo ships have some external elements such as grilles and walkways, and this one has None in addition to almost entirely using rounded walls. It kind of gives it the impression of being a smooth ovoid space lump where the other miskis are all generally more greebled than everyone else.
  • Scrungle the interior. As it is it feels a little sterile, especially for a miskilamo. It could use more dirt, litter, and decor.

Apogee-dev avatar May 05 '25 21:05 Apogee-dev

ok well if shoilet is "faction staple" then it sucks and should eb changed

thgvr avatar May 05 '25 21:05 thgvr

thgvr i have bad news about the actual irl shitty fishing boats miski ships are supposed to feel like

more to the point shrinking the bathroom doesnt necessarily mean a shoilet (mostly, it means moving the laundry machine). at the same time, i wouldn’t complain if it did because, yeah, a miski ship of this size should feel at least a little cramped, especially in spaces that aren’t heavily trafficked or critical to gameplay.

Apogee-dev avatar May 05 '25 21:05 Apogee-dev

well shiptest is not IRL and enforcing shoilets on contributors really sucks.

thgvr avatar May 05 '25 21:05 thgvr

a bathroom’s mechanical purpose is an afk closet, the main reason we make them bigger is to serve a ship’s aesthetics. in this case too big makes it feel wrong. i dunno why this is such a sticking point, tbh? Making the bathroom 2x3 instead of 3x3 is not going to devastate the roleplay quality of the small miskilamo generalist. in fact with how its laid out all it would mean is shrinking the shower to 1 tile instead of 2 (I only just noticed that actually. definitely too luxurious for miski’s spartan approach to ship design) and moving/eliminating either the washing machine or towel rack.

Apogee-dev avatar May 05 '25 21:05 Apogee-dev

the year is 2023 you are supposed to stop mapping shoilets the year is 2025 you are suppposed to map shoilets

Erikafox avatar May 05 '25 21:05 Erikafox

im sorry but if there is space for more bathroom size, it should be done. this fucking sucks image

my irl bathroom in strasbourg had more space than that and i had to put my legs in the shower to use the toilet

On a serious note here, I genuinely do not see the issue with a large interior, its a lump made for hauling cargo. You need space to do that, and cutting corners for a cargo ship with a large interior sounds reasonable.

For rooms being too big, this may be an example from a big ship, but miski has not strayed from big layouts in their design. Look at the massive bathroom (the one on this ship is inspired by shitty gas station bathrooms, trucking), the mess and the dorm. I only see the exterior bits being on the mudskipper and no other miski ship. image

I would like to hear more thoughts on this, ultimately. If its largely negative from Staff (Not 40 random people dogpiling) I will close it, as I feel like this is healthy for the game in the current era we are in, and a cramped ship frankly sucks for roleplay 9/10 times. This is coming from someone with a majority of their playtime on the kilo and mudskipper.

thearbiber avatar May 05 '25 22:05 thearbiber

cargo ship needs large interiors

the rooms i’m complaining about are all not cargo spaces. The cargo bay is only too big because it has a non-cargo room stapled to it, it’d be fine otherwise

bathroom inspired by shitty gas stations

i’ll be real the 2-tile shower and towel rack automatically makes it nicer than most bathrooms in the game right now. this thing has a nicer bathroom than the riggs or any inteq ship

big rooms on shetland

shetland is intended to be miski’s attempt at a more luxurious ship, making that a deliberate break. But it’s also a bad ship i’d like to replace, honestly. I don’t think of it as a particularly good example of miskilamo design.

exteriors on other miski ships

falmouth and shetland both have exterior catwalks and/or fins in addition to mudskipper. Tortuga has rocks. Only kilo doesnt have anything because it’s tiny but also has a pretty lumpy hull with pronounced asymmetry. This one is downright smooth and egg-like and that’s what feels weird about it.

Apogee-dev avatar May 05 '25 22:05 Apogee-dev

Overall, I like the design of the ship.

On the cargo bay. I feel the cargo bay/kitchen is fine from an aesthetic and division standpoint. Even if they are not separated by walls, the areas are quite clearly defined and separated through the use of railings and decaling, and rather visually pretty. I think it'd be a shame to lose that in favour of walls.

Gristlebee avatar May 05 '25 23:05 Gristlebee

the edited walls & extra dust decals are good, im happy with that. it’s a little thing, but that bit of decking and dirt makes it feel as miski as it should so it fits in better with its peers.

i’m still not thrilled about the cargo/mess situation and think the ship wouldn’t be hurt by a column shaved off the hallway and bathroom (to be clear, thats all i wanted, i wasn’t demanding a shoilet on pain of death), but it isnt a total dealbreaker for me. i’ll just grumble about it now and then, probably.

If you don’t mind, i’ll probably ping you in ruinyard with some suggestions on the description or add them as a review later.

We live in a propane-less society. Should be addressed.

Maybe make Foreman an officer role so it gets the highlighted text to indicate captainship?

might not need two air alarms in the cargo bay?
