Set max-height and max-width on large tether elements

I need to be able to make a large tethered element shrink to fit the available space it is constrained too. If the large tethered element is able to change its attachment, It should attach and shrink such that it is as large as possible.

Is there currently a way to accomplish this?

It's almost the same problem I'm facing. I would like the dropdown menu to have the same width of the trigger button: screen shot 2016-09-20 at 7 27 35 pm
