Failed to launch past start up window

I installed the steam JK directory and renamed exe files. The windows open showing it's loading, then nothing happens/opens. Last thing I see is a white windowed screen. The windowed screen does end up closing out and doesnt stay open. Below is requested error from RPT file:

I tried this with the GOG version of the game and got the same results.
