cannot redirect back to Desktop Client after signing into Github account on browser

Version & OS
App image of Desktop 2.6.1 for linux, OS is Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Steps to reproduce the behavior
- Use Brave Version 1.2.43 as default browser.
- Open App Image
- Click "Sign into Github.com"
- Get redirect to Brave, turn off the shield and sign in
- Get prompt "Open xdg-open?" Click "open xdg-open"
- nothing happens, the Desktop client gets stuck in loading state waiting for signing in
Expected behavior
I expect to be redirected back to desktop client and get signed in smoothly.
Actual behavior
Nothing happens.

Open App Image
It's likely there's something not set up right about the protocol handlers that's causing the App Image build to not handle the xdg-open call, but it's been too long since I've looked at that area.
I have the same problem in Linux Mint and I created issue #405. When I tried it in Opera, a pop-up window with the text "open in xdg-open" appeared. But when I clicked the "Open" button, nothing happened.
Under Firefox Console:
Error: Content Security Policy: The page’s settings blocked the loading of a resource at inline (“script-src”). content.js:1:637110 Warning: Prevented navigation to “x-github-desktop-dev-auth://oauth?code=
” due to an unknown protocol.
Might be (or not) the same issue with Github Desktop for Windows/Firefox a couple of years ago. here
@omerasif57 I don't believe that's the same issue as this. I think we lack the ability to connect up the AppImage with the browser mechanism for invoking the callback for our protocol handler (which should be xdg-open).

Just upgraded to 2.6.3 and it works. Using Pop!-OS 20.10 + Firefox
I have this issue in a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.2, GNOME with GitHub Desktop v 2.6.3-linux1. Using Chrome Version 89.0.4389.47 (Official Build) beta (64-bit).
I believe I have found that the issue is the xdg-open is resulting with "No Apps available" to open the result from the browser. For me, the xdg-open directs to Software Center, where it is unable to locate an app to perform the request, and I cannot select GitHub Desktop as it is not available in Software Center.
@thwaller can you confirm that you're using the AppImage?
@shiftkey Yes, using the AppImage. I tried with the deb and it works fine.
@thwaller cool, sounds like we've got some cases that are not the AppImage (and just PopOS being out of date) so it's hard to keep this focused on that area.
Need to install the correct MIME type. It correctly installs

Same issue here on Pop!_OS 20.10, is there a way to bypass and manually authenticate?

Unfortunately I received the same errors for Brave and Firefox. Nothing seemed to change on my end.
Same issue with the .deb package 2.8.1-linux2 RC2. My previous install ( which I did last week or two, I think ) was fine. I followed README instructions.
This time, I tried to do that manually by downloading release from gh since url exceeded its monthly bandwidth limit. I got this. Tested with: Firefox 78.10.0esr and Falkon 3.0.0
A little update. I managed to do authentication. Since I could do authentication on a fresh install of Debian, I took my firefox profile files and placed them into firefox folder of my main OS. Issue was still there but, x-github-desktop-dev-auth appeared so I tried to choose github-desktop instead of Always ask and I managed to do that by setting it to file /usr/bin/github-desktop
I hope that it will help with troubleshooting or as workaround.

Works for me, however you have to manually select the appimage file when it asks, simply clicking "open link" with GitHub Desktop selected in the available applications doesn't work. Clean install Ubuntu 21.04 and Firefox. Note: I use appimaged to manage appimages and set them up automatically.
Edit: I also installed the snap of brave browser and tested that, and that is still seeing issues, especially as Brave doesn't allow to manually select an app to open the link with. However there appears to be some progress as focus of the window is returned to GitHub Desktop when the link is opened in brave. Nothing more happens though, just waits indefinitely.

i think thats the limitation of appimages , the Browser is expecting GitHub Desktop to be installed as a traditional package and not as an appimage , that's why you have to specify the appimage
