Does this app need a logo?

I'd be happy to provide a quick one, free of charge.

Would only like to confirm if it's considered, or if you've had a design in mind.

Don't want to go through with this for nothing after all...

I had never though of this but I am open for this. It could be cool to have something for the website. I don't know where we would use it in the client, though. We have our little space man in the about window, but that's all we have. What are you thinking? What kind of design and where would you think it makes sense to apply it?

Ask and you shall receive:

I made this with the original GOG Galaxy Logo in mind:

Image

If it's supposed to represent a Galaxy, than my idea represents the "Mini" in the client. Something small enough that it can snugly fit in "The Big Galaxy", yet both still make it complete, and still be complete without it.

Though I'm sounding kind of pretentious now. I apologise for that.

Anyways, the point is, it wasn't even a sweat. It's ultimately your software, your choice, and your brand in the end. Whatever you choose I'll be fine with.

It's just my way of showing my thanks, and the interest in the potential here.

Hi @SecularSteve Thank you for the effort and the idea.

I do have a few questions, however. Won't we get into copyright, trademark or licensing troubles when we use something similar to the 'original' gog galaxy logo?

How much effort was it to do this? I mean, you first post something like

Don't want to go through with this for nothing after all...

Which makes it sound like that would be a lot of effort to make. And then it is

Anyways, the point is, it wasn't even a sweat.

all of a sudden.

Back to the topic of the logo itself. I personally find the design a bit too simplistic, but i'd say the same about the 'original' as well. The logo will become part of the 'brand', as such it must have distinguishing features and be recognizable. This is less important for 'GOG Galaxy' on its own because it already is associated with the brand 'GOG' and the 'logo' it uses is more akin to symbol used for some desktop shortcut, an icon. But minigalaxy does not have such a large brand backing it. I also don't necessarily think we need to hint at some kind of relation with GOG Galaxy. In fact, i'd rather think we shouldn't. Because a relation like this just doesn't exist. We're not affiliated and no complement of it either.

But i don't want to only post criticism. I appreciate the offer and would like to give a few ideas/suggestions: What do you think of the idea to cut out a simplified, iconized picture of an actual galaxy, like andromeda or milky way in a circular/cd-rom like shape? Why cd-rom? Because a lot of the 'Good old games' stem from that era and discs as much as offline installer are not really that much of a thing anymore. I think nothing symbolizes the 'good old times' era better than some outdated media or other object related to those times. If a snippet of a galaxy is too much or too detailed, how about placing a couple of 'stars' in a black, dark blue or violet circle?

I think there's also the feature request/idea with the loading screen on start: #575 This might be a place where a logo would help. Aside from that, on the github main and maybe the application's about dialog. The question is whether that logo would then replace the space man. I'm not sure what i personally would prefer there.

To start with, you're welcome.

To answer your questions:

  1. I doubt it. I was trying to be distinctive enough while at the same time having an evident similarity that will charm some people. I doubt anyone would sue over that.

  2. It's a bit contradicting, but let me explain.

When I said for nothing, I was trying to be polite under the assumption that maybe nobody's looking for a logo, and didn't want to look like I'm pushing something you don't want or need. A Permit first was better in this case. I hate getting on people's bad side because of a poor choice of words after all.

I've had enough experience that it only took me 10 minutes. Don't want you to think this is something that I exhausted myself over, and want to charge people for when I've made it just for fun.

  1. I see all your points, and your idea of a Galaxy ClipArt in the shape of a CD sounds amazing. Might try it this week.

Thanks for the effort, that is a cool idea. I don't think this fits with the spirit of the current logo, though. Right now we have this little guy:

For the loading screen image, there was this suggestion for now, but I don't know where it came from and the person who made the PR for the loading screen is not actively working on it anymore:

I think what would be nice to have is something like the text logo I commissioned for the VaporOS website: https://sharkwouter.github.io/vaporos/

So in summary, I think what we could use is a loading screen and a title for the website. The logo could be redone, but I wouldn't want it to be too far removed from what we have now. A quick sketch would do for now, then we can talk about it. That is if you have time for iterations, otherwise it's fine too.

What do you think @SecularSteve?

Honestly, that could be good. I'd be interested to see what you would come up with. Could work for the loading screen.

I was bored, just in case anybody's interested:

(Smaller variant could be used for favicons, larger one for loading screens, etc.)

Source file is an inkscape svg:

Probably unnecessary though, since you have the pretty little alien in the space suit. I didn't see that one before being bored for 15 minutes 😂

ell1e avatar Feb 27 '25 18:02 ell1e

Do you have an SVG version of that alien though? I could make one for you, if needed (unaltered).
