backspace should undo state change

almost everyone who uses this types the wrong letter at some point and immediately backspaces to choose the correct letter. This fails because the state of the keyboard has changed, and the letter they meant to press is no longer present! This would complicate the state machine quite a bit, but would be necessary for use by humans
