I don't seem to find what is the default font used for TeX rendering. Also, there is no example showing the code/requirements for using custom fonts.

Can you please help me out

For mathjax it's using Gyre-Pagella fonts. For the sake of keeping plugin size small, most of the fonts have been removed.
