YTDL mp4 downloads often replaced by a thumbnail on download

I've noticed a consistent tendency for a YTDL download to complete (I can see the slower progress in the UI and the temp file in the download directory), but then be replaced by a thumbnail (the UI reports newspaper is downloading the thumbnail). This has happened across different subreddits.

I don't know if it's related, but I notice that only smaller mp4s ever seem to download properly, eg, mostly under 40Mb. When using another ripper like BulkDownloader for Reddit, a considerable amount of larger vids can get downloaded for an identical source/search.

Win10, RMD Version: 3.0.0.

Interesting, it seems like YTDL must be failing to complete the download. Do you have an example URL that you know is failing in this way?

so when I run RMD on /r/Gifrecipes and it goes through it I will have very small, thumbnail like images/gifs. below is an example url
