Is backend for local storage compatible with pre-existing file tree?

Does XBackBone support the use case of providing a web frontend to a pre-existing local file tree, without any automatic modifications of the local tree?

For example, Nextcloud captures a similar feature set, but populates the data location in the file system with its own private file hierarchy.
