ERROR: Could not open file

I have tried to provide a barcode file barcode.fas but there is always the error "ERROR: Could not open file". I have to rename my file into barcode.fasta and flexbar worked. Why use such strict file name strategies? Is such strict rule also infects fastq file like fq is forbidden?
