Using a lease after expiration just calls for trouble, I agree. But adding an option to store leases persistently and not release them upon shutdown seems like a sensible addition....
How about implementing it with a default timeout of e.g. 5 minutes that can be configured using an environment variable (or at build time)? Would that be a fair compromise?...
