Key Derivation?

What exactly does the "key derivation interval" option do in OpenHayStack? I've searched all over and can't seem to find any answer.

I found this: When you pair an AirTag with an Apple ID, your computer and the AirTag agree on a cryptographic “seed”. This is used to generate a random data string every 15 minutes.

Does this apply to MAC address content? Someone pls clarify if rotation is mandatory, or can we hard code it and will that work indefinitely?
