Unable to sign in via Plex SSO

Open jpcastberg opened this issue 3 months ago • 26 comments

Description

Attempting to log in via Plex SSO fails without any kind of indication of what went wrong. After closing Plex login window, GET request to /api/v1/auth/me is executed with 401 response and body:

{"message":"cookie 'connect.sid' required","errors":[{"path":"/api/v1/auth/me","message":"cookie 'connect.sid' required"}]}

Version

docker with tag :latest, also tried most recent docker image in sctx/overseerr

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open window, navigate to Overseerr login Page
  2. Attempt to login via Plex (I am using username/password for Plex, not SSO)
  3. Plex reports that the login is successful and that I can close the window. Overseerr continues to show the login page.

Same issue here. I've made no recent updates. It's affecting all users. My guess is that it's Plex dropping the ball here, thanks to the recent security incidents.

matthoendorf avatar Sep 17 '25 02:09 matthoendorf

Several people reporting this on discussion #4251 as well, and some further reports on reddit. This is also happening on tautulli, so best guess is that this is on Plex's side, maybe something broken with their authentication, or they made some change that was not made clear to third party app devs?

Seems like it's a Plex issue. A thread was opened on their forums: https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-oauth-authenticate-with-plex-broken-after-plex-web-update-v4-152-0/931098

Plex is fixing this: https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-oauth-authenticate-with-plex-broken-after-plex-web-update-v4-152-0/931098/16

This has been resolved for me now. Login working again.

Login started working again for me as well.

It sounds like this will get broken again, but Plex will roll it out with more communication: https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-oauth-authenticate-with-plex-broken-after-plex-web-update-v4-152-0/931098/24

Still having this issue today, but Plex is up-to-date. Is there some step I'm missing to get the initial setup authentication working?

RampageRobot avatar Sep 17 '25 16:09 RampageRobot

It started working for me this morning across multiple devices. The only update that was needed was for Plex to update their web API. There shouldn't need to be an update on your end. Maybe try clearing cookies and browser cache?

DustinCampbell avatar Sep 17 '25 18:09 DustinCampbell

It's working for me now on a few devices as well. No clearing of anything, but that certainly is a good idea for folks anyway.

Tried it after a full PC restart, hard refresh, two different browsers, recreating the docker container from scratch with a fresh config, even tried doing it from another PC on the same network. No dice. I guess I'll just wait it out, see if it unlocks itself after a while or something.

Same issue here this morning after it was "fixed". I just tried again and it's working now. Probably CDN related delays?

Bizarrely, this only seemed to be the case while running Overseerr via docker compose. I switched to docker run with a new container and everything is working fine.

I had the same issue, also now resolved on my side. Was running the :latest tag through docker compose on an arch linux host machine.

I don't know if this is related or not but since The Great Plex Password Reset of 2025 and the follow on OAUTH issues, since regaining control of my Overseerr container I am getting random 404's on it and very slow initial load times.

I've rebuilt my container and repulled the image but the issue continues. I am using nginx as a reverse proxy and have yet to try bypassing that to see if the issue is nginx or the container but this was all working before I had to do the re-auth.

I've been meaning to rebuild my container using a Docker Compose and move it to my newer docker host. I'll try that and report back if things start working more consistently.

TheFiZi avatar Sep 21 '25 20:09 TheFiZi

Did you reauthenticate the plex server by hitting refresh the servers button on the Overseerr settings -> Plex page?

sleighton avatar Sep 21 '25 21:09 sleighton

Did you reauthenticate the plex server by hitting refresh the servers button on the Overseerr settings -> Plex page?

I did not.

I moved the container to a stack on my newer docker host and things felt a lot snappier.

I just followed your instructions too and hit refresh, re-selected my server and hit 'Save Changes'. I was not prompted for authentication at anytime during this.

TheFiZi avatar Sep 21 '25 21:09 TheFiZi

My understanding is it doesn't prompt but it does refresh the token. Check your logs and see if any 404's are showing up after you did the refresh. It made them go away for me, my logs only have 401's which are caused by an entirely different issue.

I'm having the same trouble, and I think it's related to my password reset as well. I had to change some of my Plex auth tokens on a few things, but I don't remember doing anything like this on Overseerr. All I did was enter my Plex IP and retrieve the server IPs last time.

Did you find any solution to this? Everything seems to be working okay in Overseerr still, but I need to add a new user from Plex and I can't right now.

Do you mean hitting refresh in the settings on Overseerr? I get the message "Failed to retrieve Plex server list."

WizenThorne avatar Sep 21 '25 23:09 WizenThorne

@WizenThorne Log out of Overseer and then log back in. Then try refreshing.

Yeah, I hit refresh, it took a minute and then populated a list of my Plex servers. I selected my server again despite the configuration already being populated below.

Oh and what @sleighton said, I signed out/in to Overseerr using my Plex account as part of troubleshooting before getting to hitting the refresh button.

That did the trick! Somehow I missed that suggestion before. Just logging out and back in again got it to find the server again! Thanks for the replies and for the help!

I'm still having this problem and I think I figured it out as I was typing here if this is helpful for anyone else, my Plex is behind on versions because I'm running the Synology packaged version. The odd thing is I looked at the settings.json and I see the correct auth token for plex that I see from get info >> XML in Plex. I've got Overseer running in Container Manager and it has the latest flag. I think my issue is stock on Plex being behind on Synology which is too bad. Deleting settings.json isn't the fix as I cannot connect Plex on setup step #1.
