Check if deleting the recent files history helps If not, how is a the load time on a folder on the same disk with only one image in it?

Is there *any* active network attached storage on the system (mapped drives, one-drive dropbox). If nomacs is slow to sort your files, then perhaps windows explorer will be as well.
