A place for general questions
For now this is linked into the Questions item in the Docs menu in Drummer.
I added a glossary to my about outline in the same way I added it to the blog one. It didn’t work. Does the glossary only work for blog outlines?
@troutcolor — it should work. I’ll take a look.
@troutcolor -- the feature is in. the about page in your blog is now processed through the glossary.
here's an example where I use it.
http://oldschool.scripting.com/cluelessnewbie/?tab=about
the image and the word "Drummer" are both in the glossary.
if you spot any other places you think the glossary should apply and doesn't please post a note.
@scripting thanks. http://oldschool.scripting.com/johnjohnston/?tab=about Is good now. I built the blog and the links all appeared.
@sbwaters -- there's a link in the Radio3 docs menu entitled Questions and it links to a public place you could post questions. I'm going to delete these comments here, because this really is a space for Drummer, and I don't want people to look here and think it's not.
Found that creating or changing the Scripts menu outline will cause the menu items DW and Docs to disappear. They reappear on reload. Nothing appears in the console other than a saveThisTab entry.
To reproduce... create a Scripts menu file if you don't already have one. Make any change. Once the file is autosaved, the menu items DW and Docs will disappear.
(First noticed in Electric Drummer, but it happens in Online Drummer as well.)
wow the bug reports are getting good. keep em coming. ;-)
@papascott -- the disappearing menus problem should now be fixed in the current web Drummer release, will be in the next E/D build.
You should be able to make changes in the Scripts menu and not lose the DW and Docs menus.
I have tried to close multiple tabs that I have open in Web Drummer, both by clicking on the "x" on the tab, and by using the File -> Close command. When I do a refresh in Web Drummer, all of those tabs open again. Is there a place to set default tab setup? I reviewed the Outlines in Drummer page (http://docserver.scripting.com/drummer/outliner.opml) and the Outliner Howto (http://outlinerhowto.opml.org/), and the Change Notes, but did not see anything there that addressed this issue.
The disappearing menus problem appears to be fixed in both web Drummer and in E/D
@andysylvester -- what you're describing is a serious problem.
Rather than trying to sweep the problem away, I want to understand what's going wrong. So please help with that.
-
Look in the JavaScript console and see if there are any error messages. I suspect you will find some. Specifically interested in what error messages you see when you try to close a tab.
-
What files do you have open? Names, if they're public -- the URLs, esp instant outlines.
-
A screen shot of the setup would help too.
I have seen situations like this, and it's usually because of a problem with one of the files.
Thanks in advance for the help. Remember we're still testing here.
BTW, @andysylvester (and others) -- one way to get a list of all your open files is to get a copy of prefs.json.
Here's a one-line script that does that --
file.readWholeFile ("prefs.json")
Not sure if this is something you would want to change, there are a lot of keyboard shortcuts to avoid, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. I use Safari, when running a one-line script with cmd-/ the keyboard short cut also reaches the Hide Status Bar in Safari's view menu. I've no idea if you could stop the shortcut traveling up to the Safari menu or there a way folk could change the shortcut?
@troutcolor -- thanks for the report, yes I'm aware that cmd-/ and cmd-\ are problems in some situations. Not sure what can be done about it. You say there are "a lot of keyboard shortcuts to avoid" -- please report them when you encounter them.
@andysylvester -- are we going to dig in and find out what the problem was? that's the purpose of testing, uncovering problems and then (my job) fixing them.
@scripting sorry I just meant that Safari has a lot of keyboard shortcuts to it would be difficult to find another.
@troutcolor -- thanks for clearing that up! you had me worried there. ;-)
@scripting I started collecting information yesterday, I am planning to post my test results today
@scripting, I figured out that the problem I had with Drummer not remembering what tabs were open was due to a setting in the browser I was using (Brave). After review of prefs.json and watching the Javascript console, I decided to see if Brave had any shields active, and it did. I turned off shields for drummer.scripting.com, and saw the expected behavior (refresh of Drummer tab showed the same active tabs). I also did a check with Google Chrome, saw expected behavior. Thank you for your debugging suggestions, it helped me figure out the root problem.

This can be even more complicated in situation when non-US keyboard layout is used. Using the Slovenian one, for instance, means that I even can not type some of this commands directly, but only together with the Option-key pressed. I do not know if the app-specific shortcuts can override those specified on the OS-level – using Apple-logo/System Preferences/Keyboard/Shortcuts/AppShortcuts. And what could be the interference between shortcuts inside AppShortcuts and inside Services. I am using an extended Apple keyboard with ISO-key layout and US-keyboard layout characters on keycaps (A1048 from the year 2005), but my typing is based on a Slovenian keyboard layout: I had to memorize the differences to be able to type the correct characters.
@Dice-right I've run into this on the German keyboard, and we're discussing this at #49. I tried the OS-level shortcuts, they don't work. 😄 I have been able to set up keys with Keyboard Maestro, and I'm working on a how-to document to set this up.
If you're familiar with Keyboard Maestro, this is how the macro for Cmd-Slash looks.
Is there a way to put cursor at the end of line without having to select within the line and moving the cursor one at a time. Clicking outside the line selects the whole line. I just want to add to the line.
@jrnoded Not exactly what you asked for, but If you're on a Mac, you can do what I do and click anywhere in the line and hit CTRL-e. Not the same, but not terrible. Drummer's outliner overrides some of the other stock macOS (Emacs) shortcuts, but so far CTRL-e still works. CTRL-a should move the insertion point to the beginning of the line, but alas, it selects the entire line (probably to be compatible with Windows Select All shortcut ¯_(ツ)_/¯.
Good evening!
It is almost midnight here, but I would like to describe something, what is perhaps a bug – or it is a feature – or just a behaviour (= a way how it works) of the application which should be described / at least mentioned in the docs.
When a new file is created in E/D, the user can choose its location inside the application – using the dialog window.
But, in case that s/he later decides to move it elsewhere, this can be done only in Finder. And if it is done at the moment when the tab with the file is still open, something special happens.
Everything what was written after the file Poskus [= attempt / experiment] was moved to the different folder / at a different location on disk is saved to the automatically created file with the same name Poskus at the previous / old location. Suddenly we have two files with the same name at different locatiosn – but also with a somewhat different contents.
The user will think that the newly added contents was added to the file s/he just moved elsewhere. When s/he will close the tab with this file – and will attempt to open it sometime in the future, s/he will open the file from its new loation. S/he will be surprised in a bad way when s/he will find out that some contents is missing. Perhaps s/he will accidentally discover that the file with the same name is still stored at the old / previous location – and that this file contains the whole contents!
mac mini late 2012, macOS Mojave (10.14.6)
As a POET I have just succeeded to post a line in web Drummer, I also tweeted about it. But yesterday something strange happened. When I opened "My Drummer" (my selected provisional title) there had appeared a second tab with a weird symbol and the Title "Scripting News". If I open this tab, all my text for the tab My Drummer disappeared. See attached screenshot. If I select Tools/Build my blog the appearance looks quite OK. See the second screenshot
There seem to be no activity in this place. I posted my question more than a month ago and the problem still persists.
