Where to ask questions about Drummer?

Open scripting opened this issue 3 years ago • 7 comments

Where should you ask questions about Drummer? Here. This is the place for that. Please do.

Here's what the caveat on the home page means -- if you see a bug, expect that it will take a while before it gets looked at. I'm just one programmer, and Drummer is a vast product, and I can only work in one area at a time.

So for example, a couple of weeks ago someone reported a problem in a new feature in PagePark. I've been head-down working on getting tagging ready, because it's part of Drummer. I want to have that connection working before shipping. I totally care about PagePark, I love PP, probably more than anyone does, but I have to stay on track, otherwise this will never ship.

So don't worry about what I might say if you report something that could be conceived of as a bug. Go ahead and do it. I will read it, and it will register. But don't expect an immediate response.

Everyone here is a programmer and product developer. I went this way because I felt you all could be the most help in the initial stages.

Hello. Thanks for investing your time in what clearly is on path to being a tremendously useful tool for all of us, Dave.

I hesitate to post this because it's one of those things that's more in the 'feature' realm than 'bug', but I'd like to get this discussion going because perhaps it'll give you a sense of whether and to what degree you should give this area priority.

In summary, in my own daily workflow my interactions have evolved to seamlessly span PC/Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

  • In the morning and evening when sitting with my wife, I use an iPad
  • During the day when sitting at a desk I use a Mac and PC
  • While mobile I use an iPhone

As such, when choosing communication tools and "idea tools" it is table stakes that those tools work seamlessly across device classes and instances. They're just information appliances. Conversely, if a tool only works on a single platform, it seriously constrains the scenarios within which I can use the platform.

So, net-net, my constructive feedback is that for those like me it would be valuable to prioritize getting the most essential features working cross-platform before going "deep" on features in any single platform.

As a specific example, it requires a bit of cleverness to figure out how to sign-into the current Drummer builds on a phone; you need to turn the phone sideways to be able to tap the Twitter icon. Even with glitches, if I could sign into Drummer on a phone and be able to do basic outline operations via touch, it would enable me to shift many simple "list" oriented activities over from Apple Notes - which I'd like to do!

I know you're juggling many things, so please just take this as input. Thanks for listening!

@rayozzie -- thanks for posting this feedback. Hopefully others will get the idea that their experiences with the product, and modes of use, are welcome.

So -- mobile outliners are a vexing problem. I too have a need for them, and my computer use pattern follows yours.

  • iPad when watching TV or sitting around the house.
  • iPhone when in the car, out and about.
  • Desktop computer most of the time.

It's really important to me to be able to capture ideas I get when I'm not at the desktop.

With your help and the help of others, at some point in this process I will focus on making Drummer work as well as I can make it work on phones and tablets. The most important thing is people be ready to give feedback on that when the work is in progress. I will send an unmistakeable signal.

I have a question about GitHub for you and everyone else -- when a new item is posted here as an issue do you get notified, or do we have to come up with a new notification mechanism? I can't tell what it does with new issues.

And thanks for participating and thanks for helping to break the ice.

The only way I've been able to find to tune notifications in the GitHub UX is:

https://github.com/settings/notifications

hope that helps.

@rayozzie -- i was trying to ask a different question -- about what emails YOU get, not me.

For example, I just posted a new issue that I very much want you to see.

The question is this -- Did you receive a notification of it?

Thanks. This is really important. If it doesn't get to you then we need to start a mail list too.

scripting avatar Jul 24 '21 14:07 scripting

I did not receive a notification, @scripting

rayozzie avatar Jul 24 '21 14:07 rayozzie

Whew. That's what I was concerned about. Now that I know, I'll start a mail service for notification.

BTW -- the new post was on-topic for the query you made earlier today about workflow.
