half-baked PR

this is indeed a half-baked PR mostly created since i need to know whether you'd appreciate if i bumped this project to django 2.x

i am dissecting this project since it looks like i can get something important from here and this something i could easily do, plus much more, probably.

also, i'd like to know if you could consider a PR where i have stripped down this project to what i think a template should look like. i mean, you don't have to merge it but would you be willing to consider it?

these are things i would kindly like to know before i do or try doing any of the above.
