accessing the description and images for google.com and ebay

in testing my code here i have found that the opengraph code is not able to retrieve a description or image for google.com or ebay (and others). i am unclear on what is the appropriate way to do this and searching in google's search engine for answers is not achieving much due to so many pages existing on the topic of how to get google to index our own pages. anyone?
