Android App is connecting but now writing any data?

Hi I am using this project for students to educate them. However suddenly the android app is not writing any wifi finger prints to the databse. I can not track it. When I change the port - it says can not connect - but when i keep 8005 is doesn't write. Any idea's?

Are you self-hosting the server, or using internalposition's? My first guess is to check if the server is out of space (or other resources), if you're self-hosting.

Does this happen using a specific device, or multiple?

No the server is not out of space, it work with a cli-scanner...I assume that it doens't work as of android 9? The android app sends empty data fields?

Android 9 and 10

Upon the release of Android 9, Google presented a surprise to all developers. The WiFi scan was cropped as much as possible. Now you can start the scan only four times every 120 seconds. If you try to start the scan more times, then all your attempts will be throttled.

In my previous article, I described a solution for scanning with equal intervals and working with WiFi RTT, but it’s worth noting that you cannot avoid throttling altogether.

Hey Rudolf,

It's possible, but the app works on my S10 Plus running Android 10. I'd imagine if it was an issue with throttling, the server would receive some data, but possibly very infrequently (maybe once every 120 seconds/2 minutes). After disabling throttling on my phone, I'm able to make the app scan every 5 seconds.

If you're running Android 10, are you able to turn off WiFi throttling in Developer Options?

It also may be worth trying reinstalling the app - uninstalling it, and then installing it again.

I'm not sure if schollz is still developing FIND3. If our troubleshooting with his app doesn't work out, we can continue troubleshooting on my fork of the app, where I can change the code, add information to the logs, etc.

Just for your info - we are enthousiastic about all te work that has been done for this framework. We are using this technology in an educational game with 350 computer science students @ Hogeschool Leiden, Netherlands...

The game is a pokemon game. The teachers are bringing in Virtual Devices (as Pokemons). The students had to prove that they were in the same location @ the same time as the Pokemon. In that sense - the Pokemon is catched!

With the deck catched Pokemons - the students have to battle against other students decks....and predict what is the best strategy...

Yes i am using a pocophone F1, android 10. We also tried it today with an tablad, android 9.

Due to covid, we are working from home and connecting through a fortiOpenvpn client to the vpn from school. But also at school Eduroam wifi the app doesn't seem to catch wifi fingerprints. It is connnecting to the findserver, but i suspec the wifi fingerprints are empty. Nothing is administrated. While using a raspberry pi in the same network als find-cli-scanner does work...

Thank you for the information. If the wifi fingerprints are empty, Android may be interfering with the app. Is it possible to confirm this with the server? When viewing a device on the server, it should show "Raw data" at the bottom:

If it shows "wifi":{}, then you are correct, the wifi fingerprints are empty. When scanning, what does the app say at the bottom, below the buttons? Please see the pictures belows:

Also, I've forked schollz's FIND3 Android Scanner and have created my own scanning app. I've updated it to be fully compatible with Android 10's permissions and battery savings. I'm still learning, so it is not perfect, but on my phone running Android 10 it works a little smoother. Would you be willing to try it if we cannot get standard FIND3 Scanner to work?

Via the AndroidApp the server doesn't show any information about the device. No "Raw data" at the bottom. (see screenshot, attachment) The app confirms it's running...but nothing seems to happen.. (see below)

After a while the app reports - it can not connect, fingerprints will not be uploaded.

Hi Rudolf,

Thank you for the updates. I think "cannot connect, fingerprints will not be uploaded" means the app had some kind of error related to communication with the server. The portion of code that it comes from is here: https://github.com/schollz/find3-android-scanner/blob/4f0100eccf41ec097416bcea55f17375376898df/app/src/main/java/com/internalpositioning/find3/find3app/MainActivity.java#L376

In other words, "cannot connect, fingerprints will not be uploaded" tells us there is a problem talking to the server, but doesn't tell us what the problem is. I'm not sure how to investigate the problem further, because the app does not report what specific error it had. Maybe Android on the phones revoked a necessary permission when this problem started?

Tomorrow or the next day I will publish my version of the scanner to the Play Store and we can continue troubleshooting.

Top! We have tested the app and it seems to work fine! I have run it on a Pocophone f1, miui 12.0.2, android 10QKQ1

FYI

• We are currenly setting up an infra structure to be able to run 60 Raspbery PI as Find3Server
• Each student group - needs to scan/learn up to 10 rooms
• We will run a python script to catch the most used Wifi signal / fingerprint for each room
• We will use the wifi signal to bring in a virtual device - named as Pokemon character / figure, about 5 minutes each character
• The student have to "catch" this virtual device - when the catching device is in the same location as the virtual device - it is concidered "catched"
• With the catched pokemons (virtual devices) the students will battle against each other in a battle area
• All the data (find3 databases) are shared - so each group could find out which pokemon are "catched"
• Students have to define a stategy - are they going to play for example with Fire, grass of air pokemons
• They have to analyze all the battles and present it to the teachers
• Our goal is to make starting students - enthusiastic for the "Data Science" track of our department...
