allow editing and deleting of comments
I don't see why we shouldn't allow people to fix their comments after the fact.
question is if we want to version the comments in the database so we keep a track record of previous versions or not. I am almost leaning towards no, this way someone can really erase his comment after regretting them. the only thing I would display then is "edited on MMM, D" in light gray type below the comment.
This should definitely be an optional feature, not allowing people to alter what they posted can be useful.
I would highly recommend adding an option to only allow this within X timeunit after the initial post.
I see your point here, but I also see someone, myself included, regretting writing a comment I wrote on some blog years ago. It might still show up in search engines and link myself to something I'm not comfortable with today. Isn't there even a legal requirement in the EU to force website owners to remove user generated content from a site upon request by the user?
but ultimately, this decision doesn't need to be made by schnack, but the individual site owner. so I agree that, if added, this should be configurable. I like the idea of setting a timespan within users are allowed to edit/delete a comment.
How about this?
- A positive value is interpreted as the number of minutes a comment can be edited or deleted
- A value of
0would mean users are never allowed to edit/remove their comments. - A value of
-1could mean users can edit/delete their comments whenever they want to.
I think #15 is a duplicate of this, and can be closed
Thought: Many modern systems don't really edit, but just add a new verison of with the old verisons still being accessible.
Dear moderator of Schnack, how can I delete my 7 "tests" comments?
