Can the meta title tag be edited without influencing the core code?

Hi schettino,

I have the following issue:

By default, the title tag of a page is is derived from the respective H1. This leads unfortunately to long and partially cropped tab titles.

Is there a way to change this behaviour, so that I can customize the title text? I would prefer a method that leaves the core code untouched, so that my changes don't get lost when I update the theme.
