User-to-User Recommendations
Idea Overview I would love a way to send recommendations from one user to another, appearing under a new "Recommended" status, tagged with the name of the recommending user.
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Currently, if I want to recommend a film or show to a user on my Watcharr instance, my only option is to tell them in-person or via a messaging service outside of Watcharr. Even if my recommendation interests them, they may then forget to actually add it to "Planned" in Watcharr later.
Describe the solution you'd like By adding a new "Recommended" status and an interface by which any user can send a recommendation to another user on the same Watcharr instance, this allows for such recommendations to be made easily and to be automatically logged such that they aren't forgotten. The receiving user can then easily either remove a recommendation or move them to a different status (planned, watching, finished, on hold, or dropped) as they see fit. Automatically tagging with the name of the recommending user adds an additional layer of utility on top — making it easy to see if someone has tended to make good or bad recommendations for you.
Describe alternatives you've considered N/A
Additional context This should distinctly be a new status, not simply putting recommendations into "Planned". Just because someone makes a recommendation doesn't mean the receiver will plan to watch it. If the user has already applied a status to the content in question, it obviously shouldn't appear as Recommended.
Hi @LoganJFisher this is a great idea, this will definitely be a todo item.
I've had an idea for a while of an "activity" page to see what your followed users are doing and watching on Watcharr. This feature could be a great start to that page, initially letting it just be the recommendations that you have received (and eventually when notifications are added, we can notify users that they have recommendations).
We will likely not add a new status for these recommendations, I think showing them in a recommended by friends list should be good enough. Then you'd be free to pick and choose from that list.
A good addition could be to add a new activity type for when you add something to your list that was suggested by a friend first (eg: "Suggested by friend"). Then we can, for eternity, keep track of who recommended specific content to us.
Thanks for sharing this idea!
Putting this on an activity page definitely makes more sense than using a status as I recommended.
Question regarding notifications: Are you supposing the introduction of notifications via email or push notifications, or just that there would be an icon that appears within Watcharr without any external notification?
If you're looking at really embracing the record keeping of who made recommendations, I have an idea that I'm going to incorporate into another suggestion I'm making: #820
I think for notifications, we'd likely start with just the icon in the user interface, then expand upon it with email/push (not exactly sure if push notifications can be a thing since we don't have an app and using those third-party services like ntfy don't really apply too well in a user specific scenario I don't think).
Addendum: It would be great to be able to provide a note along with the recommendation.
