Can not seem to match "[ ]"

I have imported a large number of files from just plain markdown. Tasks were marked up as:

• [ ] Task A which is not done
• [X] #3

I was hoping to use the plugin to do a mass change of [ ] to TODO and [X] to DONE. No matter what I try, I can not seem to make this work with [ ] characters.

[ ] finds nothing \[ \] finds the appropriate number of items (testing on a single page first) but when I enter replacement text and choose Replace All, it says it worked but the page is no different.

I tried something simple such as searching for hello and replacing with goodbye. That works fine.
