celery environment instance stuck at running with ready task

in one client example in prod, there is a human task followed by an exclusive gateway, the gateway is yellow/ready, and the instance is stuck in status running for days. it appears as though the message that triggered the background execution did not work as designed, either because the message did not get to the worker, or because the worker could not compete the job. perhaps if the instance is locked, it could display this symptom.
