Any way to get left and right items to not have a gap on the opposite side?

I would like to use this timeline snippet to display a time line of events with incoming events on the left and outgoing events on the right. Pretty easy to do with your timeline-item-left and timeline-item-right classes, but they leave a gap on the other side of the timeline. Is there any way to not have that happen? I particularly liked your timeline because it seemed to interleave items on the left and right without having gaps across the line, but maybe this is not possible if the side is specified?

I've attached a screen shot showing how it looks when you interleave the left/right divs and pasted a mockup of what I mean by not having gaps on the other side of the timeline (ignore missing bits of lines ... that's just from cut-and-paste).
