I would like to cite the usage of Interspec in my publcation. Is there a preferred way to do this? If yes maybe add it to the readme.

Hello, this is very nice of you to cite InterSpec!

Unfortunately I haven't formally published anything on InterSpec, so there isn't a great citation.
But when people have previously asked, I've suggested:

InterSpec - spectral radiation analysis software.
    Sandia National Laboratories.
    https://github.com/sandialabs/InterSpec

I'll leave this issue open, as I do intend to submit something somewhere, for a better reference. Sorry, -will

I like the example citation formats for Skyfield: https://rhodesmill.org/skyfield/installation.html#citing-skyfield

Github also offers guidance on creating DOIs. https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/archiving-a-github-repository/referencing-and-citing-content
