Rebrand project to avoid confusion
The description of the repo says "Fork of original project on Google Code as it seems to have died". The open source version died because it has moved to a payed closed version on the appstore, which seems weird, since the blog of one of the authors still mentions the code is GPL3.
Anyway, since they are using the name in the appstore it might be a good idea to rename the project to something else.
When I say, "seems to have died," I'm referring to the Google Code project which hasn't been updated in years but you're right, Movist the software is still very much alive. I should probably at least make mention of the version in the App Store. When I saw the App Store version, like you, I was a bit surprised to see that they don't give the source to it since it's GPL (the post at your link just gives a link back to the Google code page), but you can license ffmpeg/libav under the LGPL so I just assumed that's what they went with, although I haven't checked.
So, rebranding... I would definitely like to avoid confusion so a rebranding is desirable, but I worry about totally getting away from the Movist name because it still technically is Movist and I feel a little like pretending it's something different does a bit of a disservice to the guys who made it originally. But I'm bad at this kind of stuff, so If someone came to me with a good name suggestion and nice icon (which it really needs even if the name wasn't changing since it still says "VLC" in the engraving) I'd probably just take it. =)
My suggestion, and this is from the top of my head - Kino. It’s simple, short and has connections with movies. Also, used in Stargate Universe.
Always thought movist came from mixing the particles mov
(typical osx extension) and ist
. But then mp4ist or webmist doesn't sound very appealing. Or the program formerly known as movist. Back row sounds evil. So Movist2 or Movist next gen?
Movium ? Moviumist ? Movistium (riffing off of Chromium)
